Real Time Digital Simulator 

The RTDS is the new roof for new microgrid testbeds Research and Development (R&D). The idea of designing a micro grid is not new since it was done by quite many universities around the world. However, this type of projects has no boundaries since it will always be used for testing new ideas that might require an update in the main algorithms from time to time. One good example of these projects was done in the University of Manitoba which consists of a real-time platform that will be used for power system control design teaching in post-graduate courses. The platform mainly consisted of two components: the RTDS and a controller (dSPACE) which was used to interface with the RTDS. As an example, a classic power system stabilizer (PSS) was constructed using the platform. Such that, the stabilizer is designed through the control system of dSPACE, while the RTDS is used to design the power system being controlled. Mainly, two educational purposes were gained from that project. First, it proved that the controller designed through a simplified model functions decently with a non-linear model. Second, the developed platform can be used for tuning the parameters of the controller
